GAMBLING

Placing a bet here or there while visiting a local casino, or while watching sports in the living room of a friend’s house or local bar isn’t really a problem. For others, these small bets can quickly escalate, leading people to feel as though they have less and less control over their behavior. 


Symptoms of Gambling Disorder include the experience of at least four of the following:

  1. A need to gamble with increasing amounts of money to achieve the same level of excitement or “rush”

  2. Repeated unsuccessful efforts to stop or cut back on gambling

  3. Restlessness or irritability when trying to cut back or stop gambling

  4. Persistent preoccupation, or having frequent thoughts about gambling

Gambling addiction is typically experienced by younger to middle-aged adults. Those with depression, bipolar or substance-related concerns are at increased risk for gambling addiction. 

Although, there is no specific cause of gambling addiction, A person experiencing depression for example, might turn to gambling to ease feelings of sadness and emptiness. However, there has been a correlation with substance abuse.
